Description
Carpopenaeus callirostris is an extinct genus of prawn from the famous Cretaceous aged fossil beds near Hjoula, Lebanon called the Sannine Formation. These fossil deposits were first mentioned by the Greek historian Herodotus where he said there were "fish in the stones".
Matrix size: ≈ 4.25" x 3.4"
Shrimp size: ≈ 2.5", small fish: ≈ 0.6"
Most fossil shrimp from this locality are enhanced to better see the contrast between the fossil and the matrix. However, this fossil does not contain any pigments, enhancements, or restoration.
Carpopenaeus callirostris and other fossils found in the Sannine Formation is known for a fascinating feature: its fossils glow under longwave UV light. This discovery has provided valuable insights into the preservation of organic materials over millions of years and has sparked interest in paleontological studies.
Fluorescence in Fossils
Fluorescence occurs when certain materials absorb light at one wavelength and emit it at a different, usually longer, wavelength. In the case of Carpopenaeus callirostris, the fluorescence is observed under longwave ultraviolet (UV) light. This type of light has a wavelength ranging from 320 to 400 nanometers.
Mechanism Behind the Glow
The glow seen in Carpopenaeus callirostris fossils is likely due to the presence of specific organic compounds that have been preserved within the fossilized remains. These compounds, which can include proteins, chitin, and other biomolecules, can fluoresce when exposed to UV light. Over time, mineralization processes can preserve these compounds in a way that maintains their ability to fluoresce.
